May 22 - To Buy Organic Or Not

A few weeks ago Best Friend introduced me to the website "The Goodness Goddess." Recently GG posted about what organic foods to buy, and what conventional foods are OK to purchase.  Here's the list:

BUY ORGANIC
Apples (all varieties)
Celery
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumbers
Grapes
Hot peppers
Nectarines
Peaches
Potatoes (all varieties)
Strawberries
Spinach
Sweet bell peppers
Kale
Collard or Mustard greens
Zucchini
Lettuce
Coffee
Blueberries
Chocolate

OK TO BUY CONVENTIONAL
(You should still give these foods a good rinse, and for the greens a good soak, before eating.)
Onions
Avocado
Sweet Corn
Pineapple
Mango
Asparagus
Kiwi fruits
Cabbage
Eggplant
Papaya
Watermelon
Broccoli
Sweet potato

In the post, "Healthy on any budget," GG explains how each food is treated and why you should, or don't have to, buy organic.  For all the details, check out her site.

I'm book marking this post on my phone so I have an easy reference guide the next time I'm out grocery shopping!

May 21 - 30 Day Squat Challenge

Incorporating little bits of fitness into my everyday is something I really enjoy.  I love checking things off of my to-do list, especially when they don't take much time and they are good for me.

I had fun doing the plank challenge a few months ago, and now I'm joining Best Friend in a 30-day squat challenge.

I have to admit, I never do squats, so starting with 50 is intimidating.  However, I know I can do 10 in the morning when I brush my teeth, 15 while I'm throwing the ball with Dog, 10 when I get up to take a break from by desk and 15 when I'm watching TV at night.  I know from the plank challenge that you really do build up the strength to get to the big number at the end, as long as you keep up with the daily tasks.

Who's in?

I'm into doing the squat challenge because BF's butt is awesome.  Not only is she incredibly beautiful and fit, but she's also a super talented writer.  I'm so excited that her new show "Girl Get Your Mind Right" is finally on MTV!  It is on everyday at 6 PM.  The star of the show, Tionna Smalls, has some fantastic one-liners that you will definitely want to incorporate into your everyday lingo (a lot of them that BF wrote!).  Woot!  SO PROUD.

May 20 - I'm back!

Hello!

If you've returned to the blog since my hiatus - thank you!  It has been almost a month since I last posted.

This was the big thing that was going on: I was in the middle of interviewing for a job while finishing up grading for the semester and attending weddings.  The academic job interview process is crazy, especially because for all the hoops you have to jump through, the salary reward at the end of the road is, to put it mildly, unimpressive.  All said and done, between a phone interview, a campus interview and then waiting to hear, the process took about a month.  In that time I also had to grade final exams, final papers, turn in grades for 64 students, and we went to two weddings, one local and one in Boston.  It was just nuts-o.

Now I'm feeling much more centered, because... I got the job! (And my grades are in and we had lots of fun at the weddings.)  I'll be a full-time faculty instructor at a university that is about an hour from where we live.  Boyfriend works in the opposite direction - he commutes about 25 minutes to work - so our current residence is the perfect in-between.  I start in August.  I'll have a steady paycheck, health insurance, dental insurance, and retirement benefits.  The gig is a 9-month contract position, but I get paid all year, so I'll have three months in the summer to do what I want as far as research, writing, and whatever else is concerned!  The job is not tenured, so that means I'm not guaranteed to have it forever, but as long as I do well, my contract is renewable.  Ah, stability!

And now that the whole rigamarole of end-of-the-semester and job market stuff is over, I can focus on living my best life.

I thought I was going to change the title of the blog because my focus now is really on living a healthy, balanced life, but the truth of it is that I still want to lose weight, and a lot of my unhealthy habits come from modeling my actions after my eat-whatever-he-wants-doesn't-work-out-stays-thin boyfriend.

I'll have to revisit my New Year's resolutions and goals over the course of the next week, but I do know that posting everyday just isn't where my heart is at anymore.  I'm not sure if I'll post on a schedule, but my idea is to post at least three times a week, about stuff that is important to me and with legitimate updates on my weight loss progress.  I also am committed to tracking what I eat on MyFitnessPal and making sure I drink lots of water everyday.

This week I'll be shaking off the cobwebs and making a plan for the next few months.  I look forward to sharing it all with you!

April 29 - Reset

Best Friend came down to visit with her husband this past weekend, and we had a glorious time.  Also, today marks three years that Boyfriend and I are together.  I've been thinking a lot about where I am in life and what I hope for my future.

As I think about my life, and what I want to do with it, I'm not sure how I feel about the intentions of this blog, and its title.  I'm taking some time away to think about what is important to me and what I want to write about.

I want to have a healthy, strong and beautiful body.  Now I'm thinking about the ways I want to write about it, and if it is time for me to change the name of the blog and the ways I post. One thing I've been thinking about is how there are things I do/don't write about because I think about the expectations of the readers.  But then I realize 1) this blog is supposed to be about what I want it to be about and 2) what readers?  There are like 10 of you out there, and I know most of you in person, and if not in person, have developed a nice online relationship with you.  And I know all of you are supportive of whatever it is that I want to do because whether you are a fellow blogger or my friend, it is also what you want for yourself - to make decisions about your life and have the people near to you support it.

It might be a little bit of time before I post again because I want to set a strong intention for this blog.  I'm 1/6 of the way through my weight loss journey, and I think it is time I changed the game.  This isn't about a relationship and extra pounds anymore- this is about me, my health and my future.

April 24

I can see the light at the end of the mass sh*t storm of work I'm in the middle of.  This the light:
I am so looking forward to getting through the end of the semester and all the grading so I can dedicate some hard core time to the gym (and the spray tan).  Exciting!

April 20

Unfortunately, I've got it backwards.
I have laid aside fishing (aka life) and gone a-business-ing.
I'll be back soon.

April 17

Not being very accountable today, and barely managing to keep it together.  Tomorrow is a new day!
